Synexus Opening

I had the pleasure today of opening the new Synexus centre in Cardiff. They're a company who specialise in improving the medical treatments available to people by conducting crucial clinical trials and I'm delighted that they're opening their new home in Wales.

By opening their new office on the outskirts of our capital city, Synexus will be able to expand on the cooperation that they're carrying out with our NHS. This will be a positive development for our health service as well as Welsh patients. The new centre will also create jobs for doctors, nurses and support staff, which is of course welcome news.

On today's visit I was able to see for myself the fantastic staff an state of the art facilities that will make this clinical centre a leading player in improving medicine for years to come. Bringing this centre to our nation makes this a proud day for Wales and I look forward to working with Synexus again for the benefit of our NHS and patients.

This piece of good news however, comes at a time when positivity is hard to come across in the governance of our NHS. Not only does Betsi Cadwaladr health board remain in special measures. The Labour government has now also placed ABMU, Cardiff & Vale, and Hywel Dda health boards in "targeted intervention", which is only one step below special measures.

As well as this, the latest figures have shown a reduction in the number of GPs practicing in Wales while 97% of surgeries have reported an increase in demand for their services. Stories such as Synexus' new centre do raise some hope, but if the Welsh Government continues to refuse to implement Plaid Cymru's policy of training and recruiting 1000 new doctors and 5000 new nurses, then the Welsh NHS could well be facing its most difficult winter to date.

This is indeed a tough time for our NHS but Plaid Cymru will continue to fight to get our policies from our Programme of Opposition implemented to improve people's lives and strengthen our health service. I want to give a big thank you to everyone at Synexus who made today's event a success, and for the crucial work that they now embark on.

The opening and an interview I gave will be broadcast on Made in Cardiff.
