Labour Must Listen to Voters on Independence say Plaid
Dr Dai Lloyd Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for South Wales West has lauded recent YouGov polling figures on support for Welsh independence. The poll found that almost a third (32%) of people across Wales would vote for independence should a referendum be held, up from 25% in June. The poll asked 1035 adults their opinions on independence between 24th-27th August 2020.
Unsurprisingly the overwhelming majority (87%) of those who had voted Plaid Cymru at the 2019 General Election were in favour of Welsh independence, the poll also found that a majority -51%- of those who voted Labour in 2019 would vote for Wales to become an independent country. A similar poll conducted by Welsh independence campaign group Yes Cymru in 2017 found that only 20% of Labour voters favoured independence to Westminster rule, meaning there has been a 31% increase in support in just 3 years.
Dr Lloyd stated,
“These figures showing that a third of people in Wales support independence are nothing short of phenomenal. At the start of the Scottish independence referendum campaign after seven years of an SNP Government, figures were around 25%, so for Wales to be at 32% without ever having a Plaid Cymru led Government is quite something to behold.”
“The fact that 51% of Labour voters in Wales support independence is fantastic news, however, Labour have consistently proved they are a party that puts their blind unionism before all else, recently voting with the far right and even “abolish the Welsh Assembly” to deny Welsh Citizens a say in their nation’s future.”
“To those 51% of Labour voters supportive of a Wales free of a Westminster’s incompetence and neglect, I urge you to vote Plaid Cymru, we are the only party that can deliver a referendum on freedom for our country.”
The Survey also found that those living in south west Wales were most in favour of independence with 37% backing the proposal. Dr Lloyd added,
“It’s encouraging to see the notion of independence is now widely accepted across the country, and even more so to see that it is here in the south west that currently has the highest support. In Swansea West I will be the only candidate standing on a platform of securing independence, a vote for Labour is a vote for the status quo.”
