WELSH GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO PLUG ‘HUGE INVESTMENT GAP’
Reflecting on this week's Autumn Statement, Plaid Cymru’s Infrastructure Spokesperson Dai Lloyd has warned that an additional £400m of capital funding for the Welsh Government will not meet Welsh Infrastructure needs.
He called on the Welsh Government to step up to the plate, and develop a National Infrastructure Commission for Wales, which will be free to raise additional funding from the private sector to deliver schemes across Wales.
Dr. Lloyd stated:
“The Welsh Government’s Infrastructure Investment Programme lists over 300 economic and social schemes with a total value of some £40 billion. An additional £400m to the Welsh Government budget, over 5 years, simply will not provide Wales with the level of capital funding that we need to invest in our infrastructure, and turn our economy around.
“A Conservative Government at Westminster will never satisfy Welsh needs. The Welsh Government needs to step up to the plate to plug the huge investment gap, and develop innovative funding models which can deliver the infrastructure improvements that we need.
“We need to get on and develop a National Infrastructure Commission for Wales which will be given the freedom to raise funds in conjunction with the private sector, so that we can truly address the infrastructure requirements facing our country.”
