Plaid backs Future Generations Commissioner in M4 Black Route objection

Plaid’s Transport Spokesperson Dai Lloyd AM has backed the Future Generations Commissioner Sophie Howe, who has stated that the Welsh Government is misinterpreting its own legislation in its case for a new M4 motorway around Newport. Ms. Howe and Plaid have consistently raised objections to the Welsh Government’s favoured £1.1bn ‘Black route’, which is currently subject to a Public Inquiry.

Dr. Lloyd stated:

“The Future Generations commissioner is right to raise this important point as part of the discussion around the future shape of the M4 around Newport and I do hope that the Public Inquiry takes this important point on board.

“It is imperative that Welsh Government, particularly in the case of a project of this scale, takes into account the economic, social, environmental and cultural impact of their decision.

“I am of the firm view that the proposed Black route does not adhere to the spirit of the Future Generations legislation, which is why Plaid Cymru supports the Blue route, which is more favourable both economically and environmentally.

“Importantly, by rejecting the expensive Black Route, the Welsh Government would make significant financial savings, which would enable it to invest equitably in infrastructure in other parts of Wales, such as North-South links, and improving infrastructure in South West Wales, which is so desperately needed.”
