Plight of Porthcawl Toilets Wins support of Plaid AM

South Wales West AM Dr Dai Lloyd has called on Bridgend County Borough Council to keep Porthcawl’s historic, Grade II listed public toilets in John Street open. A petition was started to save the lavatories, which attracted over 7,000 signatures was handed to Bridgend Council. Dr Lloyd has written to Bridgend County Borough Council and Welsh Government on the matter. Dr Lloyd said on the issue,

“Public lavatories are vital public services. The fact that 7,000 people have signed a petition against the proposals should tell the Labour administrations in both Bridgend and Cardiff Bay that their decision to slash funding is deeply unpopular with local people in Porthcawl. Public toilets are a necessity for many elderly people and those with certain illnesses. They allow people to keep their dignity and independence, as without them, many people would feel they are unable to leave the house for fear of embarrassment.”

In his letter to Bridgend Council, Dr Lloyd called for more funding to be made available so that the lavatories could remain open.

“After considering the views of 7,000 people who felt strongly enough to sign a petition against the closure of these public toilets in Porthcawl I hope you will reconsider your decision to remove a vital public service from the town and make further funding available to ensure their future for local shoppers and day trippers alike to use.”

Bridgend Council are due to close the toilets on John Street in January 2019
