AM calls for Better Planning Regulations

South Wales West AM Dr Dai Lloyd has raised questions to Counsel General, Jeremy Miles AM following representations from constituents across the region regarding controversial planning applications, particularly in Mayals in the Swansea West constituency and Blaengwrach, in the Neath Valley.

Speaking in the Senedd Chamber, Dr Lloyd asked Jeremy Miles AM what representations he had made on behalf of the Welsh Government regarding the duties of local planning authorities to advertise the receipt of planning applications.

Dr Lloyd then went on to ask if additional provision would be considered for making the public aware of planning applications in the future. Dr Lloyd stated;

“Usually the local authority will have put a notice on a remote lamppost somewhere and consider this to be adequate in terms of consultation. Usually by the time local residents find out about these notices the decision has already been made.”

Dr Lloyd raised the issue of planning notices following numerous complaints from across the South Wales West Region.

“There have been a number of cases where I have received complaints and representations from constituents regarding the planning process and the perceived lack of public knowledge and consultation around them. Particularly in Mayals where residents felt they were not properly consulted over the erection of a phone mast, and also in the community of Blaengwrach at the head of the Neath Valley where Neath Port Talbot Council approved planning permission for a petrol station at the entrance to the village despite strong opposition and a petition from local residents.”

“I hope that the Welsh Government will work with Local Authorities to enhance the planning process so that local residents are more involved in the decisions that affect them in future.”
