AM Calls for More Welsh History to be Taught
Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West, Dr Dai Lloyd has again called for more Welsh history to be taught in schools across the country. Dr Lloyd commented in reaction to the “Cofiwch Dryweryn” mural in Llanrhystyd, Ceredigion, being defaced with “Elvis” on Sunday.
Dr. Lloyd has consistently called on the Welsh Government to ensure that Welsh history is taught in schools, and has pushed for it to become a key component of the new Welsh curriculum currently being developed by the Welsh Government.
Responding to the weekend’s events, Dr Lloyd stated:
“This is why I constantly talk about the need for our culture and history to be taught in every school in Wales. We do not know our own history. We are not taught about the 800 years of oppression, Llewelyn ein Lliw Olaf, Owain Glyndwr, the Chartists, the Rebeca Riots, Merthyr Risings or the drowning of Capel Celyn.”
“This is what happens when we are taught the "glory of the British Empire", the names of English kings wives, and battles between the English and Scottish monarchs. Only when we teach the history of Wales to every child in Wales will we truly appreciate the significance of Tryweryn.”
Within hours of the vandalism being spotted and shared on social media, a group of activists were at the site painting over the Elvis graffiti to ensure the famous “Cofiwch Dryweryn” message is still seen on the Ceredigion roadside.
