Active Travel Needs Joint Working Says Plaid

Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West Dr Dai Lloyd has called for Welsh Government to work more closely with councils across Wales in order to promote active travel. Speaking on the importance of active travel Dr Lloyd stated,

"The benefits of active travel are enormous. Keeping active can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 35% and early death by as much as 30%. It is recommended that adults take part in 2 & a half hours moderate exercise a week.

"One way this could be achieved is 30 minutes five times a week. This is the perfect length for short, local journeys on foot or by cycling."

Dr Lloyd called on Welsh Government and local authorities to work closer together to improve infrastructure to incentivise active travel across the country, adding

"What I'd like to see is more investment from Welsh Government so that councils can in turn invest in improving cycle tracks so that it's easier to get about."

"Investment in active travel schemes could also see reductions in obesity figures, saving the NHS money. It could also help ease congestion problems by getting more people to walk or cycle to work rather than drive."
