Plaid Cymru Demand Urgent Incinerator Decision
Application raises issues of national importance regarding proximity of incinerators to schools and homes say Plaid
Plaid Cymru AM Dr. Dai Lloyd has today called on the Welsh Government to make a decision on the ‘call-in’ request for the planned waste incinerator in Llansamlet.
The application is due to go before Swansea Council’s planning committee on Tuesday 2nd April, with officers recommending Councillors approve the plans and allow the incinerator to be built.
Dr. Lloyd called on the Welsh Government to ‘call-in’ the application on October 4th 2018, but the Welsh Government has yet to make a decision on the matter.
Dr. Lloyd has today written to the Welsh Government Minister, Julie James urging her to make a decision on the ‘call in’ prior to Tuesday’s planning meeting.
Dr. Dai Lloyd stated:
“On October 4th last year I wrote to the then Cabinet Secretary for Planning requesting that the Welsh Government ‘call-in’ the planned waste incinerator in the Llansamlet area of Swansea.
“The application to develop a waste incinerator in Llansamlet is understandably causing significant concern locally, given that it would be a few hundred metres from a residential estate and close to Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Lon Las.
“It is particularly disappointing that 5 months on from my original request, the Welsh Government has still not made a decision on the ‘call-in’.
“The application, I believe, flies in the face of the Welsh Government’s Wellbeing of Future Generations Act and Air Quality policies, and raises issues of national importance in terms of proximity of incinerators to schools and residential dwellings. This is why Plaid Cymru is calling on the Welsh Government to call in this application.”
Dr. Lloyd added:
“There is significant opposition to this locally, and residents want the Welsh Government to make a decision prior to Tuesday’s planning committee. They are at a loss as to why the decision has not been taken sooner.
“The Welsh Government need to commit to making a decision on this important matter as a matter of urgency.”
