Cwmllynfell Surgery Needs Joint Working says AM

Dr Dai Lloyd, Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West has called for three health boards to come together and work in unison to find a solution to primary care in the Amman Tawe cluster.

Dr Lloyd made the comments in a packed public meeting in Cwmllynfell on Friday night discussing the proposed closure of the doctor’s surgery in the village.

Speaking at the meeting Dr Lloyd mentioned the problems facing rural communities

“We have an unique situation in this area, where we are situated on the boundary of three counties, and three health boards. This proposed closure, although taking place in Neath Port Talbot affects people in Carmarthenshire and Powys.

We have a dense population in this relatively rural region, of around 11,000 people from Cwm Twrch, Ystradowen, Cwmllynfell through to Gwaun Cae Gurwen and Brynamman that are miles away from any urban population centres.”

Dr Lloyd added;

“We need to see all three health boards, Swansea Bay, Hywel Dda and Powys work together to find a solution to find an innovative solution that is attractive to both health staff and patients and is geared to improving care for all.

It is clear that people in Cwmllynfell do not want to lose their surgery with many worried about the lack of transport available to get to other locations such as Ystalyfera and Pontardawe.”
