Neath Abbey Needs Better Access says AM
Dr Dai Lloyd, Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West has called on the Labour Welsh Government to ensure CADW and Neath Port Talbot council do more to promote the hidden gem in the county.
Neath Abbey was described as “the fairest in all of Wales” by Tudor historian John Leland.
Raising the issue in the Senedd today (Wednesday 26th June) Dr Lloyd stated,
“There is frustration in Neath that Neath Abbey, a key historic monument, is not adequately promoted as a tourist attraction. There are concerns that it is not adequately advertised and has poor access and signage.”
Dr Lloyd called on the Welsh Government to ensure joint working between the local authority, CADW and the South Wales Highway Agency to maximize the tourism potential.
“You can easily drive from Llandarcy to Aberdulais and not even know that there is an abbey a matter of metres from the A465. We need to ensure that attractions such as Neath Abbey are promoted far and wide, not just with one sign a few yards from the junction.
Neath Abbey is a forgotten jewel in the crown of Neath Port Talbot and we have to ensure that local residents and visitors alike are made aware of the history and culture on offer across South West Wales.”
