Joint Working Needed on Gower Common says AM
Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West, Dr Dai Lloyd has called on South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael and Swansea Council to ensure closer working on Gower Common following the recent spate of livestock deaths.
Dr Lloyd wrote to Mr Michael after the increase in the number of sheep and horses being killed by cars in recent weeks. In his letter, Dr Lloyd stated;
“You may be aware that concerns have grown locally regarding the increase in accidents involving vehicles and animals who are grazing on common land in the Gower Commons Area.
I am told that despite incidents being reported to the Police, no action has been taken.
The Local Authority have confirmed that the speed limit has been reduced to 40mph on the common, but it would appear that enforcement of this limit is proving difficult.”
Dr Lloyd asked Mr Michael and the council to ensure they work closer together in an attempt to reduce the number of incidents saying;
“The City and County of Swansea are also considering further signage warning motorists of animals grazing freely, and I would be grateful if your officers in the area could work with the Authority on this.”
Dr Lloyd also called for motorists to take extra care when driving on the common;
“With the school summer holidays now upon us, we will see an increase of vehicles using the common, I would ask them all to take extra care when using the roads around rural Gower to ensure these incidents are kept to a minimum.”
