Install Electric Car Charge Points in New Homes say Plaid
Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West, Dr Dai Lloyd has called on the Labour Welsh Government to ensure that charging points for electric vehicles are installed in every new build home in Wales.
The calls come after Wales became the first country in the world to declare a climate emergency in April this year. The UK government also announced the England only policy of charge points in all newly built houses in July.
Dr Lloyd stated,
“There are a range of legislative options available to the Welsh Government in pursing the agenda of reducing vehicle emissions. One such option would be following the policy announced by the UK Government in July, of installing charge points for electric vehicles in all new build homes in England.
Following the announcement of the climate emergency, First Minister Mark Drakeford stated that he didn’t believe the declaration “represents a sharp difference in policy.” Dr Lloyd raised the issue with Counsel General, Jeremy Miles AM on the floor of the Senedd today (Tuesday 17th September).
Dr Lloyd went on to say,
“We have to ensure our First Minister realises how serious the situation we find ourselves in is. Installing charge points for electric cars will help to reduce emissions greatly. Now is a time for actions, not just words.
There is a shortage of charge points across the road network in Wales, and this could be preventing more people switching from vehicles which run on fossil fuels to those that run on electricity. Installing these points in new build houses could help to increase the number of electric vehicles across the country.”
